Getting High, floating above the earth, is the theme behind every pre-technological religion.

The Twelve Apostles (12 terrestrial castes) watch as Christ, the 13th hanging-man, floats into Self-hood.

The Hebrew letter-code is mem, water, suggesting fluidity, buoyancy, floating and symbolic re-birth (as in Baptism and similar purification rites involving water). According to Crowley the cognate gods are Osiris (as dead-and-reborn image of the Resurrected Body), Soma (the divine plant of the Vedas, variously identified as cannabis or the psychedelic mushroom, amanita), Titan Tethys (as images of gravity-less floating, Oceanic consciousness, transcendence of solid-earth Fourth Circuit hive responsibilities). The lotus is the associated plant, echoing Buddhist use of this image for the yogic drop-out; the caste-totem animal is a strange eagle-snake-scorpion cherub symbolizing extra-terrestrial bio-systems.

Other images are the beryl or aquamarine, Wine, myrrh: all suggestive of sensuality, Dionysian intoxication, hashish-vision, escape from hive sobriety.

Cavendish recognizes the reversal of conditioned tribal-values: “In the process of the Hanged Man the [magician] is drowned in floodtides of his inner being [somatic-sensory energies. The false self which is destroyed is the whole ‘higher’ structure of outlook, attitudes, tastes, acquired mental and emotional habits (first four hive circuits), which cages the inner man]. In a reversal of values [—the Hanged Man is upside down on his gibbet—] this structure is overturned and fragmented to release the fertile waters of the depths.”2

The sinister overlay of the card—imagery of death by execution: hanging and/or crucifixion—clearly reflects the terror which the hive authorities use to block this futation. The First Circuit signals: Pleasure is dangerous! The Second Circuit warns: “If you relax your vigilance you will be put-down!” The Third Circuit worries, “I can’t understand; am I going mad?” The Fourth Circuit whispers, “Taboo—violation of sex-role.” Only when these hive taboos are understood and mastered does the pure joy of self-reward neurosomatic pleasure begin.
